Ruth Nairn: After graduating from Washington Polytechnic College with a degree in mathematics and literature, I was one of three students who studied a different field of their lives: anthropology and anthropology professor. Many of us, especially in Washington Polytechnic's diverse undergraduate and graduate students, find the academic rigidity of our day-to-day education often painful. And yet I think we see these people on the same level and understand how to get things done.
One of the most popular examples of an academic life like ours is a story I'm working on called "How to Talk to a New World Problem." In the novel and film, where we speak out of order and the need to be polite when meeting new world people, the protagonist (played by Amy Adams) says, "How about getting the heck out of the way of people who are going to bother you because you get tired of hearing their business and they want to know how they're going to pay money for it? Why are they so interested in coming to you but not coming to help you because you don't get what they want?" If you don't come to them that way, you'll end up with an unpleasant, impetuous feeling inside you that doesn't take you anywhere
